Everything you need to know about Henna Tattoos

EN:

"Looks like there's a girl in Cluj doing henna tattoos." Andrei tells me with an excited tone, curious of my reaction.

We never really talked about this before, so he didn't know my opinion about them. He just knew that I'm too indecisive to get a tattoo, unlike him, "Mr. decision".

He also knows that I would love to be able to make up my mind easier for whether or not I'd still want them on long term. That's because I get a new idea every other day, that's nurturing my desire to make some kind of art on my skin.

Art - nothing else.

"In Cluj?" I say jumping out of bed. Ahh, too fast. I got dizzy.

".. Show me!" and ii grab his phone playfully from his hand.

"Oh, take it easy you little dwarf!" he laughs.

"Blah, blah, blah .. the first artist in town .. - where's a link? A name, something, anything ?!" I get impatient. "Oh, there it is!"

Two seconds later and I already found her on Facebook. I tell her I want us to meet.

It's been a while since the first message, but it was my fault. I arrived at Yolka around noon yesterday, where I Ana and the boys, armed with cameras, where waiting for me.

We start chatting about blogging and about the lifestyle it involves and then we get to work.

"Let's choose a design, or do you already have an idea about what you want?"

Mhm, typical me, "No, but I saved some pictures on Pinterest."

We take a look together, Ana shows me some of her favorites and eventually I let the boys decide for me.

"Are you sure, guys? Sure, sure?" - "Okay, let's do it that way."

And so it went:

( except a few of Ana's additional details, that she added to make it unique.)

"In CLUJ?" spun sarind din pat. Ahh, prea repede.

"Ah, uite-o!"

In doua secunde o si gasesc pe Facebook.

"Sigur? Sigur, sigur?" - "Okay, hai ca-l facem asa."

Si asa a si iesit:

( doar ca Ana a contribuit cu detalii in plus, sa-l faca unic. )

What you need to know

Prior to my first date with Ana, I started doing a little research on the net. I wanted to know what I was getting into before I blew it up.

I want to tell you what I've learned then and what Ana explained too, while drawing my new tattoo.

  • Henna is a natural paste, made from a very pigmented plant. It is placed on the skin in a drawing, usually Indian, sine it's the origin of this technique.
  • The paste dries eventually and falls off the skin, leaving the pattern imprinted in the first two layers of the epidermis.
  • It mustn't be removed manually after drying, but still be kept intact for another 12hours.
  • Then you should wipe it with oil and avoid contact with abundant water in the first 24 hours.
  • The color that remaining on the skin is not black! There is NO natural black henna, just reddish-brown.
  • Indeed there is an artificial paste you can get temporary tattoos with, that sometimes gets confused with henna, but it can damage the skin. Ana explained she can't afford to put anyone's health under risk, especially because of the high number of allergic reactions to the substance it's made of.
  • The drawing is visible between 10-15 days, during which the skin naturally exfoliates and the model starts to disappear.

  • Henna e o pasta naturala, facuta dintr-o planta foarte pigmentata.

I think henna tattoos are a great alternative for the more undecided ones, like me.

On the other hand, the structure of the lines and dots that make up the drawing is done manually, and thus usually ends up not being perfectly straight or symmetrical.

"It just turns out the way it does." Ana said nonchalantly. "It's okay, I like it .." I said honestly impressed by the delicate work that lies behind such a tattoo. A cat eye is a piece of cake compared to this, I said to myself.

Eventually I left Yolka smiling widely, making a mental note too visit this  place again. It's really something special..

We went outside to take a few more pictures of the tattoo, while the henna paste was still wet. You can see them below. I'm also going to make a few shots in the final form, or the henna's "shadow" as I like to call it.

Don't worry, I'll post them soon! - Until then you can contact Ana here, if you want to try it out for yourself too.

By the way, she celebrates one year since she started this passion in June and she told me she'll  do henna rings for free that day! Yuhu!

Meanwhile, I'll leave you with my Pinterest board for henna tattoos that I'd love to give a try, for some further inspiration.

"Iese asa cum iese." mi-a spus Ana nonsalanta.

E chiar aparte..

Am mai stat sa facem cateva poze cu henna inca in forma de pasta, pe care le poti vedea mai jos, iar acum urmeaza sa fac cateva in forma finala.  "Umbra" cum imi place mie sa-i spun, care s-a asternut pe piele.

Rabdare, vin in curand! - Pana atunci puteti sa o contactati pe Ana aici, daca cumva doriti sa incercati.

In iunie serbeaza un an de cand a inceput aceasta pasiune si mi-a spus ca va face inele de henna gratuit! Yuhu!
